OnePlus 8 Pro: practical review and buying guide
The OnePlus 8 Pro adds meaningful hardware over the regular OnePlus 8: a sharper 120 Hz AMOLED display, two high-resolution wide-angle cameras, an optical telephoto lens and 30 W wireless charging. The Snapdragon 865 remains strong for ordinary tasks, but the condition of a used screen and battery matters more than old flagship branding.
A Pakistani price-reference listing carries a figure of PKR 132,799 for a corresponding model, but this is not a confirmed in-stock offer or an appraisal of a particular used handset. Memory, warranty and PTA status can change the amount a buyer should pay.
Screen, design and daily handling
This is the model to consider if display quality comes first. The 6.78-inch 1440 × 3168 OLED panel has a 120 Hz refresh rate, making text and interface motion especially smooth. A high-resolution curved display can be expensive to replace. Look for a uniform grey screen, intact edges, no permanent navigation marks and normal touch response along the sides.
Processor, RAM and storage
Both the 8 and the Pro have the Snapdragon 865 platform, so basic processor speed is not the biggest reason to pay extra for the Pro. This version uses LPDDR5 memory, available in 8 GB and 12 GB configurations. UFS 3.0 storage is fast for opening files and apps, yet it cannot be expanded by microSD.
Plan storage before purchase. The OnePlus 8 Pro cannot accept a normal microSD card. Take account of offline video, camera files, downloaded maps and WhatsApp media when selecting a storage version. Cloud backup and an external USB drive can help with archives, but neither turns a small internal storage configuration into a larger one for app installation.
What the cameras really offer
A 48 MP Sony IMX689 main sensor is paired with another 48 MP ultrawide, an 8 MP telephoto camera and a 5 MP color-filter module. The telephoto provides a useful perspective for portraits and closer views without relying entirely on digital zoom. OIS is fitted to the main and telephoto cameras. The additional filter camera should not be mistaken for a separate high-quality zoom lens.
Battery capacity and charging
A 4,510 mAh battery powers the phone, with 30 W wired and 30 W wireless charging. The wireless feature requires a compatible charger to reach its rated speed; inexpensive generic pads may charge more slowly. On a used handset, measure battery drain during an actual call and video playback rather than accepting a screenshot of an estimated health percentage.
Software and app compatibility
OxygenOS originally shipped on Android 10. Update support and available builds have changed over the phone’s life, so the installed version deserves inspection. Google Play compatibility is not the main concern here; it is whether the device receives the security coverage and banking-app support you need.
Original software and installed software are different facts. A seller may have updated the operating system, installed a custom ROM or changed regional firmware. Review the build information, test fingerprint authentication and check whether your banking applications run without unusual permissions or warning messages. That quick check is more useful than a screenshot of a benchmark score.
Buying and checking this phone in Pakistan
IP68 is a valuable design specification, but it is not a warranty against water damage on an old, opened or repaired phone. In Pakistan, inspect the SIM slot, cameras and display repair history, then verify the exact IMEI through PTA/DIRBS. Check 4G calling as well as mobile data on the carrier you will use.
Network compatibility is a model-specific question. The OnePlus 8 Pro includes 5G hardware in the version described here, but that does not automatically mean every local frequency band or operator feature will work. LTE calling, stable mobile data, the SIM configuration and the exact model code should be tested on the phone itself. A 5G logo is not proof of usable 5G service in every area.
Alternatives and trade-offs
The standard OnePlus 8 is lighter and less complicated. The Pro justifies its larger size if you will actually use the telephoto camera, the sharper screen and wireless charging. Neither is a sensible choice at a price that competes directly with a recent, supported phone without considering battery and software age.
What to inspect before deciding
For the OnePlus 8 Pro, begin with the exact model shown in Settings, compare its physical RAM and storage with the advertisement, and inspect the display under both dark and bright backgrounds. Open the camera app and switch between the lenses that the phone actually has. Record a short video, listen to the microphone and both available speaker channels, and inspect the USB charging port. Do not accept an untested battery or a photographed IMEI as conclusive evidence of condition.
On an older OnePlus phone, pay particular attention to OLED image retention, the alert slider, fingerprint reader, camera stabilisation and any history of battery or display replacement. A device with an undocumented repair can cost more to keep operating than one sold in better condition at a slightly higher price.
Who should choose it
The OnePlus 8 Pro is a feature-rich second-hand option for a buyer willing to inspect an aging flagship carefully. Prioritize a healthy OLED, a genuine original battery or documented replacement, sound USB-C charging and an independently verified PTA status.
