OnePlus 8: practical review and buying guide
The OnePlus 8 is a slim Snapdragon 865 phone with a 90 Hz AMOLED screen, 5G capability and a useful optical-stabilized main camera. It has the speed associated with a former flagship, but its 2 MP macro lens, lack of optical zoom and wired-only charging keep it below the 8 Pro for people who put photography first.
A Pakistani price-reference listing carries a figure of PKR 83,099 for a corresponding model, but this is not a confirmed in-stock offer or an appraisal of a particular used handset. Memory, warranty and PTA status can change the amount a buyer should pay.
Screen, design and daily handling
At 6.55 inches, the panel is easier to handle than the larger Pro. The 1080p-class resolution is clear enough for maps and streaming, while 90 Hz makes scrolling look smoother than a conventional 60 Hz display. The curved edges look elegant but make protective glass and replacement panels more complicated to source.
Processor, RAM and storage
The Snapdragon 865 and Adreno 650 offer considerably more processing headroom than inexpensive entry-level phones. For multitasking, the 8 GB configuration is already capable; 12 GB is useful mainly if the used-device price difference is modest. Remember that storage is fixed: neither capacity can be expanded with a memory card.
Plan storage before purchase. The OnePlus 8 cannot accept a normal microSD card. Take account of offline video, camera files, downloaded maps and WhatsApp media when selecting a storage version. Cloud backup and an external USB drive can help with archives, but neither turns a small internal storage configuration into a larger one for app installation.
What the cameras really offer
The 48 MP Sony IMX586 main sensor has OIS, which is relevant for hand-held photographs and steadier exposure in difficult light. A 16 MP ultrawide expands the frame for buildings and group scenes. The third lens is a 2 MP macro, not a zoom camera, so distant subjects will rely on digital cropping. The phone supports 4K recording, although the best stabilization mode may impose separate resolution limits.
Battery capacity and charging
The 4,300 mAh battery and 30 W Warp Charge 30T make sense for daily use, but used units can have noticeably lower battery health. It does not provide the 8 Pro’s wireless charging. A compatible fast charger and cable matter: an ordinary USB power source may charge more slowly.
Software and app compatibility
It launched with Android 10 and OxygenOS; a second-hand handset can be running a different software build. Check the precise build and security patch level on the individual phone rather than assuming the latest Android version is available. Standard Google services are part of the original OnePlus software experience.
Original software and installed software are different facts. A seller may have updated the operating system, installed a custom ROM or changed regional firmware. Review the build information, test fingerprint authentication and check whether your banking applications run without unusual permissions or warning messages. That quick check is more useful than a screenshot of a benchmark score.
Buying and checking this phone in Pakistan
Pakistani buyers should check the IMEI using the official PTA/DIRBS process and verify that the status applies to the handset being sold. A marketplace label such as PTA approved is not proof. Also inspect the AMOLED for burn-in, test both speakers, verify USB-C charging, and check mobile data and calls on your own SIM.
Network compatibility is a model-specific question. The OnePlus 8 includes 5G hardware in the version described here, but that does not automatically mean every local frequency band or operator feature will work. LTE calling, stable mobile data, the SIM configuration and the exact model code should be tested on the phone itself. A 5G logo is not proof of usable 5G service in every area.
Alternatives and trade-offs
Choose the OnePlus 8 Pro when a sharper 120 Hz panel, telephoto hardware, wireless charging and IP68 protection are worth the additional cost. Keep the regular 8 on the shortlist when size, weight and simple performance matter more than camera versatility.
What to inspect before deciding
For the OnePlus 8, begin with the exact model shown in Settings, compare its physical RAM and storage with the advertisement, and inspect the display under both dark and bright backgrounds. Open the camera app and switch between the lenses that the phone actually has. Record a short video, listen to the microphone and both available speaker channels, and inspect the USB charging port. Do not accept an untested battery or a photographed IMEI as conclusive evidence of condition.
On an older OnePlus phone, pay particular attention to OLED image retention, the alert slider, fingerprint reader, camera stabilisation and any history of battery or display replacement. A device with an undocumented repair can cost more to keep operating than one sold in better condition at a slightly higher price.
Who should choose it
The OnePlus 8 makes the most sense as a carefully inspected used flagship for someone comfortable with its software age and lack of expandability. A low asking price alone is not enough; screen condition, battery health and genuine PTA status determine whether the deal is sensible.
